Dannyboy's Sandwich Bar in Kelvin Grove: Consider your hoagie cravings satisfied.
One thing I really really miss about the US is HOAGIES. You may know them as submarine sandwiches. Whatever you call them the number of decent sub shops in the US is limitless. I was pretty bummed when I found out that my only real option here in Brisbane was....Subways -cringe-
Who knows what goes into that bread? I was terrified. Luckily, Dannyboy's Sandwich Bar in Kelvin Grove came to our aid. We were contacted by owner, Daniel Mckennariey, and invited to come along for lunch. Dannyboy's opened their doors 2 and 1/2 years ago after Daniel saw an opening for a decent sandwich shop in Brisbane.
Dannyboy's is located on Musk Ave in Kelvin Grove...if you are familiar with the area you won't be surprised to learn that the majority of their customers are uni students. Their location paired with their affordable prices make them a dining hotspot on campus. If you were to visit during school time I imagine they would be bustling with people. We visited on a Saturday at around 11:00am. Dannyboy's is also a few minutes away from the Kelvin Grove Markets. Owner, Daniel, told us that after the market end on the weekend they get quite a few people coming through. We were fortunate enough to visit at a quiet time. We had the whole sandwich bar to ourselves!
For our first Dannyboy's experience we decided to eat in the upstairs area. We loved the funky, cool decor of Dannyboy's. It really had that American sandwich shop vibe going. One thing we found really fun were the chalkboard walls upstairs. Dannyboy's is a kid friendly restaurant. They supply plenty of chalk and erasers so you can keep your kiddies entertained with decorating the wall while you enjoy a relaxing lunch. We are all kids at heart right? We enjoyed putting our mark on Dannyboy's as well.
One thing that sets this sandwich bar apart is that all of their bread is made fresh in store! The bread is made using- flour, water, yeast, salt & extra virgin olive oil and that's it! The way bread should be. The sandwiches are made to order using high quality ingredients. They make homemade soups each day using all natural ingredients- perfect to beat the winter chill!
So what did we devour on our first Dannyboy's experience...
From the gourmet sandwich menu we tried "The Greek" and "The Halfbrick"
The Greek consisted of roast lamb, tomato, cucumber, red onion, feta, Greek peppers, kalamatta olives, shredded lettuce, mayo, and herb dressing... The ingredients were so fresh & tasty. The beautiful flavour of the roast lamb was paired beautifully with the salty, juicy olives. The herb dressing really helped bring all the flavours together. If you are a fan of Greek food this sandwich is like all the best elements of Greek food combined into one.
The Halfbrick consisted of oven roasted chicken breast, smoked bacon, avocado, tomato, lettuce & ranch dressing. After reading about this sandwich on the menu I knew it would be my favourite. This is a classic chicken hoagie. The oven roasted chicken breast was mouthwatering. The smoky bacon was perfectly prepared...nothing like that flavourless, cold bacon that slap onto sandwiches at Subways...
Just thinking about this sandwich is making me extremely hungry.
From the homemade soups menu we had Roasted Pumpkin & Garlic, Broccoli Cheddar, and Beef Chili...
YUM! The soups were divine. If I had to choose a favourite I would definitely say try the Broccoli Cheddar. It was so creamy, and cheesy... with chunks of real tender broccoli.
The Roasted pumpkin was both sweet and savoury. This soup was very creamy, and smooth as well with just the right amount of garlic. The Beef Chili was very filling. It was so tasty when paired with the fresh bread. I enjoyed the spicy kick. If you love a nice chili get down to Dannyboy's!
To finish off lunch we enjoyed two, exquisite Red Velvet Cupcakes that Daniel had made fresh that morning. If you have been following them on Instagram (@dannyboyssandwichbar) you've no doubt seen Daniel's cupcake creations. They are exceptional! Some of the best Red Velvet Cupcakes I've ever had I can't wait to try some of his other creations.
We highly recommend you give Dannyboy's Sandwich Bar a try for yourself. You haven't lived until you have tried one of their hoagies. You'll never want Subways again. For those who are cutting back on the carbs Dannyboy's also offers lettuce wraps!
