Baguette Bistrot & Bar in Ascot

A few nights a go we took a trip to Brisbane's oldest French Restaurant Baguette Bistrot & Bar. In case you haven't heard the news Baguette has recently been sold. Yes, after 37 years the Domenech family has released the reins on this popular Ascot establishment.

We had the pleasure of meeting the new owner Emilian Jayakody, and surprisingly discovered that he used to work as a waiter at Baguette in 1994! Emilian even helped train staff at Brett's Wharf, a restaurant part owned by the Domenech's. After this Jayakody left the food scene for some time and became involved in the retail sector.

Jayakody decided to re-enter the hospitality sector and contemplated purchasing a few coffee shops but then Baguette went up for sale and he simply couldn't look away. Jayakody's fond memories of working at Baguette definitely factored into his decision. He told us he would have only moved back into restaurants for Baguette. His love for this beautiful restaurant was very evident.

You'll see some very  familiar faces when visiting Baguette. Head chef, Graham Waddell is still working his magic in the kitchen & the very hospitable sommelier Scott Du Reitz is still behind the bar having worked at Baguette for over 20 years!

Now I'm sure you're wondering "How was the food?" ....

Jayakody describes the food as "very french" and we think he'd definitely be an expert on that having lived in France for 20 years. Du Reitz reaffirmed this telling us that Baguette is more French than ever before. There are so many delicious options on the Baguette menu ... For our entrees we ordered Confit pork belly with Cloudy Bay clams, romesco sauce, and garlic butter ....and Scallop boudin blanc with crustacean sauce, sea parsley, and finger lime.

The pork belly was juicy, and incredibly tender. This was a beautiful combination. The romesco sauce and garlic butter went perfectly with the clams and juicy pork belly.

The Scallop boudin blanc was delicious as well. I only wished I had taken up the waiters offer of bread. You'll want to mop up every last drop of this mouthwatering crustacean sauce.

On to the mains.... For our mains we had... Char-grilled black angus rib eye bordelaise with wild mushroom croquette, garlic snails, frisee...and Spiced honey roasted duck breast with smoked beetroot puree, roast butternut, almond, vanilla, and orange jus.

Look at this lovely steak! It was exceptional. This dish has it all. I like my steak Medium Rare and this was cooked to perfection. It was like cutting into butter- so incredibly tender. The outside of the steak had that smokey char grilled flavour which went heavenly with the garlic snails. And don't get me started on the croquettes... Creamy, crunchy goodness... they could be an entree on their own!

The spiced duck was a flavour packed masterpiece. The duck was very nicely cooked. All the ingredients complimented each other so well . This is a top notch sweet & savoury dish.

We couldn't go pass the dessert menu.... For our desserts we chose... Baba au Rhum with cured pineapple, lychee granita, and vanilla ice cream... and Profiteroles filled with espresso crème, hot chocolate sauce, and pistachio parfait.

The Baba au Rum was incredibly moist. So delicious with the pineapple and lychee granita. It was the perfect summer dessert.

The profiteroles were devine. They are filled with delicious espresso creme and covered in a rich hot chocolate sauce. If you are a chocolate fanatic like me this is the dessert for you.

Needless to say, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Baguette. This place is a true gem & if you haven't checked it out, you are truly missing out! With such amazing food it's no surprise that the place gets very busy on the weekends so we recommend you make a reservation to avoid disappointment.

Tip:
For only $30 you can enjoy a 2 course lunch at Baguette!
